Aggressive thermal management technology

Heat is the enemy of all LEDs. The ability to manage it is arguably the single most important factor for a successful LED system.

Heat lowers light intensity, creates color shift and shortens an LED’s useful life, and as the efficiency of LED arrays improve, it is increasingly difficult to extract heat.

Relume LED Life vs Operating Temperature

LEDs are designed to perform optimally at an operating temperature of 25° C (77° F) or lower. As this chart illustrates, for every 1°C (1.8° F) rise in operating temperature, LED life is reduced by 0.5%. That means for each 17° C (63° F) rise in operating temperature, the life of an LED is cut in half.

Controlling the junction temperature is what thermal management is all about and it’s where Relume’s technology shines. Only Relume has the aggressive thermal management technology needed to allow light engines to perform with significantly higher light output, and for dramatically longer periods of time than the competition.

Light Depreciation Chart

  • LED lifespan is dependent on operating temperature; calculations are based on 17°C/62°F average nighttime temperature.
  • T-12, T-8, and T-5 fluorescent rated life calculated on 8’ tubing at industry standard of 70% still operating at 50% of the provider published rated life.
  • Metal Halide & High Pressure Sodium rated life calculated at industry of 70% still operating at 50% of the provider published rated life.
  • Neon rated life calculated at industry standard of 60% still operating at 50% of industry acceptable assumed maximum life.
  • Competitor’s LED calculated at industry standard of 70% still operating 100% of the provider published rated life.
  • Relume LED light engine calculated (above industry standard) 99% still operating at 100% of the provider published rated life.

Relume Technologies estimates that its lights will have a 15-year useful lifespan before any significant lumen depreciation occurs.
